Hadith: Virtues of the Qu’ran (G1/A1)

Teacher: Dr Akram Nadwi
Frequency: See teaching schedule

Dr Akram will teach the chapter on the Virtues of the Qura’an in the Hadith collection Mishkat al-Masabih (English translation: A Niche for Lamps). Mishkat al-Masabih is an expanded version of Al-Baghawi’s Masabih al-Sunnah by Mu?ammad ibn ?Abd Allah Khatib Al-Tabrizi. Khatib Al-Tabrizi died 741 AH (1340 or 1341 CE) rendered this version of the original text more accessible to those not having an advanced knowledge of the science of hadith. It contains between 4434 and 5945 hadith, divided into 29 books and is considered by Sunni scholars an important writing.

During this course, Dr Akram will read and provide a commentary to book 8, ‘Virtues of the Qur’an’ in Mishkat al-Masabih. This book contains some 114 Hadith, and they mention the virtues about those who learn and teach the Qur’an, the merits of certain suras, the miracle of the Qur’an, the rewards associated with reciting the Qur’an, and the traditions about the variations in the reading.
