QI 2024 will cover Sura Qasas (Q. 28).
The tafsir of the entire Sura will be presented in the lecture theatre. By the end of the day, students should be able to appreciate the basic structure of the Sura, the main themes and how the different parts of the sura cohere.
SURA OVERVIEW & STRUCTURE
Sura al-Qasas is a heavily story based Meccan sura.
The sura can be split into three large sections: (1) The story of Prophet Moses peace be upon him from birth to prophethood; (2) God relating lessons from Prophet Moses’s peace be upon him story to the Prophet’s peace be upon him situation in Mecca, and (3) The story of Qarun.
Notably, the sura begins and ends with mention of God’s scripture paralleling Sura Ta Ha which is also about the story of Moses.
STORY OF PROPHET MOSES (PEACE BE UPON HIM)
The first section of the sura begins by narrating the situation in Egypt any why Prophet Moses peace be upon him was sent to Pharoah and his people. The story of Moses is recounted (vv. 7-43) starting chronologically from his birth when he is placed into the river, his coming of age in Egypt and the encounter that causes him to flee to Madyan, and his time spent in the service of the two womens’ father in Madyan.
This section of the sura concludes with his meeting with God in Mount Sinai, his acceptance of the mission to call Pharoah to the worship God and free the Israelites, and the initial encounter between Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and Pharoah.
GOD’S KNOWLEDGE & LESSONS
The second section of the sura then transitions to God’s knowledge of the unseen and how the Prophet peace be upon him is continuing the same message that had previously come to Prophet Moses peace be upon him.
God reassures the Prophet that only He is able to guide whoever He wills – but that he sends messengers to call to His message and that the reckoning will be in the Hereafter. This section concludes with God establishing several proofs of His existence and Mercy upon creation.
STORY OF QARUN
The final section of the sura (vv. 76-82), recounts the story of Qarun. Qarun was an extremely wealthy man from Prophet Moses’ people, but his wealth made him arrogant and a tyrant. He was swallowed up into the ground as a recompense for his deeds and a warning for the people.
The sura concludes with a reaffirmation of the importance of taqwa and holding onto God’s revelation.
