Q-Connect is an innovative online programme of Qur’an study that combines guided reading of a pair of suras from Juzz Amma with structural analysis. These suras are powerful and succinct, widely recited and memorised but less widely studied in depth.

This course is connected to yet distinct from other CEI Qur’an Programmes in its content, medium and cadence. Click on past to see suras covered in previous years.

FREE FATIHA TASTER SESSION

Free to Attend – In-Person/On-line – Free Food and Networking

This free introductory session on Wednesday 22 November 2023, 7:00 – 9:30 pm will explore the contrast between the consistency of the message of the Qur’an and the fact that it reveals new insights on repeated engagement.

The session will also introduce the format of Q-Connect and the methodology to be adopted for mapping Suras Q. 95 and Q. 96 through ring structure analysis and tafsir of Sura al-Fatiha. Click here for further details about the Free Taster Session.

CREATING CONNECTIONS

Q-Connect has been designed as a bespoke online course, and allows attendees to connect to accessible, prolonged and rigorous engagement with the Qur’an.

The frequency and format of the sessions provide attendees with the time to review and reflect on notes, as well as explore the content and context of the suras.

FORMAT

Study of each sura will begin with a session of guided linear reading in English translation with a focus on rhetorical techniques, key words and themes including their wider use in the Qur’an.

Once attendees are familiar with the thematic content, diagrams illustrating the structural composition of the sura will be used to facilitate pattern discernment in a subsequent session.

COURSE AIMS

Q-Connect aims to expose attendees to:

Guided English reading of the Qur’an, with reference to classical tafsir literature
Rigorous linguistic and thematic analysis of the Qur’an
Theories of composition of the Qur’an, such as Ring Structures
Relationships between suras
Linguistic devices and syntagmatic relationships deployed
Key spiritual and practical lessons in these suras.

MAPPING SURAS

Q-Connect will focus on the identification of elementary constituent segments such as words, grammatical phrases and linguistic devices within suras to better discern patterns and themes, to develop a prism for analysis of meaning and elucidation of connections.

Diagrams illustrating the thematic structure of each sura will be used as the basis for teaching and to reveal the connections between verses. We move beyond a guided reading to a guided structural analysis looking at how the interplay between words and verses is connected.

PLOTTING CONSTELLATIONS

Q-Connect aims to facilitate study and analysis of suras in Juzz Amma. These suras are shorter than those covered in other CEI programmes, and as such, Q-Connect enables attendees to complete a guided reading and structural analysis of several suras over the eight sessions and explore the thematic connections between suras.

During the course, particular emphasis will be placed on exploring the thematic and linguistic connections across the selected suras.

DISCERNING PATTERNS

Q-Connect will introduce selected theories about the composition of the Qur’an, such as Ring Structure and Semitic Rhetoric. The course will also draw upon classical tafsir literature and highlight the spiritual and practical lessons that the structure and the style of the suras reveal.

Attendees’ exposure to analytic methodology will facilitate their own discernment of themes and connections within and between suras in their ongoing engagement with the Qur’an.

IN PERSON GATHERING

Monthly sessions will be delivered online. Whilst the online format facilitates broad access, we appreciate the benefits of meeting in person and will offer attendees the opportunity to meet and network in Manchester at a post-programme in-person gathering.
