Ghazali: Prayer and Charity (G1/A1)

Shaykh Babikir will cover the chapter on the ‘Prayer’ and ‘Charity’ in Ghazali’s ‘The Forty Principles of the Religion’ (al-Arbaʿīn fī Uṣūl al-Dīn). This book is a summary of perhaps his most famous work, the Ihya Ulum al-Din.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The chapter on the Prayer and Charity are the first and second chapters in the second quarter of ‘The Forty Principles of the Religion’, and the chapters have the following sub-sections:

Ritual Outer (Body) and Inner (Inner) Purification
Being vigilant about the Prayer’s outward practices
Being vigilant regarding the spirit of the prayer
Discussion about types of people, and the three levels with regards to their giving in charity.
Five matters to be vigilant in, such as giving in secrecy, to be aware of largesse, not being resentful and thinking about where you give in charity.

Shaykh Babikir will discuss the Qur’an and Hadith traditions Imam Ghazali presents in these chapters and how these can become a means of purifying our hearts to better appreciate the purpose of our prayers and charity.
