Every term, CEI hosts an eight week short course in central London on a variety of topics and themes.

TERM 1

Details for London Short Course term 1.

UNDERSTAND YOUR PRAYER

An exciting short course that explored the meaning of what we recite and hear in our daily prayers.

The first session each week explored the meaning of the different litanies we recite in the different parts of the prayer; the second session explored some of the common suras that are recited in the communal prayers, such as Eid and Friday prayers.

In so doing, we hope to better understand the purpose behind our daily prayers and thereby develop a stronger connection with our Lord.

TERM 2

Details for London Short Course term 2.

METAPHORIA

An exciting eight week short course that explored selected Metaphors in the Qur’an. Metaphors are used to enhance the effect of what is being said by making it beautiful, impressive, aesthetically striking, and semantically powerful.

During this course, we explored the themes and styles in selected verses all containing the word ‘mathal’. The sessions highlighted how the images are used to present contrasting concepts, describe human traits, highlight the power of God, clarify the nature of the world or simply introduce inspiring narratives.

TERM 3

Details for London Short Course term 3.

PURIFICATION OF THE HEART

An exciting six week short course which explored selected chapters from Imam Ghazali’s book ‘The Forty Principles of the Religion’. This book is a summary of perhaps his most famous work, the Ihya Ulum al-Din.

During this course, we explored the following four chapters from the third and fourth quarters of this book: (1) Frivolity & Love of Status, (2) Ostentation, (3) Sincerity, and (4) Death. The sessions explored the salient points in each chapter, and discussed the Qur’an andHadith traditions Imam Ghazali presents in each chapter to highlight how these can become a means of purifying our hearts to better appreciate the purpose of our lives and thereby remember God in a more purposeful and meaningful way.
