The fifth annual Q-Immersion at St. John’s College, Oxford, covered Surah Ya-Sin (Q. 36). A guided reading of the whole Surah on the first day was followed by a formal dinner at Christ Church College and ended with an opportunity for personal study. On the second day, three facilitated workshops offered the space to read, reflect upon and discuss an academic study of the Surah which attendees then presented to the wider group.
A Meccan sura that emphasizes the divine source of the Qur’an and defends it from the charge of being poetry made by man (verses 5–6, 69–70). It warns of the fate of men who are stubborn and always mock God’s revelations. They are reminded of the punishment that befell earlier generations, and of God’s power as shown in His Creation. The end of the sura gives strong arguments for the reality of the Resurrection.
An exposition of the whole sura was presented on the first day taking place in the lecture theatre.
By the end of the day, students were able to appreciate the basic structure of the sura, the main themes and how the narrative develops.
