PAST Q-IMMERSION

2025 – Sura Nuh (Q. 71)

Burdah

The seventh annual Q-Immersion at St. John’s College, Oxford, covered Surah Nuh (Q. 71). A guided reading of the whole Surah on the first day was followed by a formal dinner at Christ Church College and ended with an opportunity for personal study. On the second day, three facilitated workshops offered the space to read, reflect upon and discuss an academic study of the Surah which attendees then presented to the wider group.

SUMMARY OF SURA NUH

Sura Nuh is a heavily story based Meccan sura.

It is distinct amongst other suras as asides from two verses, 1 and 25, it consists of a continual narrative speech, made by Prophet Noah.

The Sura may be divided into four sections:

SECTION ONE

NOAH’s WARNING

God commands Noah to warn his people in verse 1. which he does. Thus, providing an exemplary template on how to call people to belief.

SECTION TWO

NOAH’s EFFORTS

The second section demonstrates his increasing efforts to call his people plainly(v2).

This is mirrored by the disbelievers progressively increased efforts to avoid him.

The different methods he uses during the call include:

a. Openly and privately calling to belief.

b. Providing worldly incentives such as provision that God will provide – rain, wealth, children.

c. Making arguments from creation and design: natural processes that are evidence of Gods work.

SECTION THREE

NOAH’s COMPLAINT

Despite his efforts, the disbelievers entrenched position is maintained and he diagnoses their condition as that of worldly attachment. Noah calls on God to punish them for not only their own disbelief but for leading others astray. The section ends with the promised consequence and culmination of the warning in Verse 1.

SECTION FOUR

NOAH’s SUPPLICATION

Noah makes a powerful supplication to eliminate disbelievers however again the motivation is clear at v27 - ‘if you leave them they will lead your servants astray.’ Thus, demonstrating the prophetic impetus for the betterment of society as a whole.
