The walk will take us from The Kiosk, Foyle Way (point A on the map), to ward the rest point (point B), and thereafter along the cliffs to at Belle Tout Lighthouse (point C), all the way to Eastbourne Sea Views (point D) onto Beachy Head White Cliffs toward The Watch tower (point E) .
We will pause along the route for short inspirational talks, Qur’an recitation and devotional songs, and stop at The Watch Tower (point E) to enjoy some food overlooking Eastbourne and the English Channel. The final part of the journey will take us through gently sloping woodlands along South Downs Way to our final destination (Point A).

This year’s theme is ‘Divine Guidance – Leading to the Light,’ reflecting on the essential steps and etiquettes believers need to follow to move from darkness unto light. During the pitstop talks, we will use the Qu’ran, prophetic traditions (ḥadīth), and relevant chapters from Imām al-Ghazālī’s guidebook Bidāyat al-hidāya to explore this theme in a meaningful way.
Abū Ḥamīd Muḥammad al-Ghazālī (d. 1111) was a renowned 11th-century Islamic scholar of Persian descent. He is known as one of the most prominent and influential jurisconsults, legal theoreticians, muftis, philosophers, theologians, logicians and mystics in Islamic history. During a long period of seclusion, he wrote his magnum opus, Ihya ‘Ulum ad-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences), a comprehensive guide covering almost every field of Islamic sciences.

The central topic for each stop will be based on Imām al-Ghazālī’s guidebook Bidāyat al-hidāya (‘The Beginning of Guidance’):
‘The most beloved deeds to God are those that are consistent, even if they are small.’
This chapter explores the etiquettes of worship and obedience as the prime essential aspects of guidance.
There will be a short talk on the following poem by Helen Hunt Jackson.
‘God’s Light-houses’
(‘God’s Light-houses’ is a poem by American poet and activist Helen Hunt Jackson (d.1885) exploring the metaphor of lighthouses and stars as beacons of guidance in darkness).
By Helen Hunt Jackson
When night falls on the earth, the sea
From east to west lies twinkling bright
With shining beams from beacons high
Which flash afar a friendly light.
The sailor’s eyes, like eyes in prayer,
Turn unto them for guiding ray:
If storms obscure their radiance,
The great ships helpless grope their way.
When night falls on the earth, the sky
Looks like a wide, a boundless main.
Who knows what voyagers sail there?
Who names the ports they seek and gain?
Are not the stars like beacons set
To guide the argosies that go
From universe to universe,
Our little world above, below?—
On their great errands solemn bent,
In their vast journeys unaware
Of our small planet’s name or place
Revolving in the lower air.
O thought too vast! O thought too glad!
An awe most rapturous it stirs.
From world to world God’s beacons shine:
God means to save his mariners!
‘Every single breath of yours is a priceless jewel because it is irreplaceable.’
This chapter reflects on how turning from disobedience opens the heart to intimacy with God and harmony with His creation.
Along the walk we will stop and listen to live recitation of the Qur’an.
Join us as we celebrate 10 years of sauntering on the coast!
All attendees will be provided with a bottle of water at the start of the walk, and as is tradition, we will end the walk with locally sourced fish, chips and mushy peas!
Saunterer’s Path is CEI’s annual summer walk. Since 2012, we have chosen a piece of coast to walk along in the south of England. Along the route we stop to recite verses of Qur’an, poetry, devotional songs, listen to short reminders and absorb the stunning scenery around us to reflect on God’s creation.
